On 27 November 2004, Scott's mentor and good friend LTC Michael McMahon was killed in a plane crash in the mountains of Afghanistan along with two other soldiers and three crew members. The NTSB is currently conducting an investigation to try to determine the cause of the crash. There is also a pending lawsuit filed by the families of the soldiers.
The Army Times published a story about the crash in it's 27 March 2006 edition. There is no way for you to access the story from their website without an account, so I uploaded the file to a document hosting company in case you wanted to read it. The story itself is upsetting, and it includes some quotes from LTC McMahon's wife.
I met LTC McMahon in Hawaii, and had several dinners at his house with his wife and three boys. He was a pilot, if memory serves, of Apache helicopters. His death really hit Scott hard.
